Lean Machining Engineer

Summary/Purpose:

This position is responsible for:
- supporting applications and optimization services in the areas of machining and grinding technologies,

- the management of multiple projects, design of experiments, collection of data, analyses of data, and presentation of data to meet the expectations of Operations’ department customers,

- providing assistance services to improve client-company manufacturing processes and performance. 

The assistance and optimization services include helping companies in identifying and implementing the most effective ways to use the basic factors of production (people, machines, materials and information) to make or process a product in ways that best support the client-company’s overall business strategy.

Essential Responsibilities:
-
Build and maintain confidence of client-company decision-makers by exposing them to and educating them about best manufacturing (machining and lean) strategies and practices, and modern technologies and management approaches and their uses.  Prepare and present briefings and reports to personnel at client companies.  Effectively interface with client personnel at all organizational levels.

- Conduct client site-visits and conduct assessments and operations review to identify needs and opportunities.  May also serve as instructor for courses that teach companies how to improve their operations and methods.

- Investigate, develop, and provide suggested solutions for improving client manufacturing operations.  Conduct technical evaluations and provide technical support to clients to assist them with integration of modern manufacturing and operational techniques.

- Support the establishment and control of project budgets.  Consult with appropriate Operation’s and project team members to resolve any problems or to discuss progress. Make internal presentations to review status of projects as required.  Assess results of completed projects and recommend improvements in methods or materials.  Provide timely internal reports to management (e.g. project reports, expense reports, timecards, etc.)

- Contribute to the strategic and operating policies, objectives, and long-range plans as requested for TechSolve.  Support the integration of the machining related activities with other areas within TechSolve.

- Research and develop work in the area of machining and grinding.  Develop, test and analyze advanced techniques to increase knowledge of advanced machining systems and aid in the transition of that knowledge to industry.

- Support effective working relationships with TechSolve staff and with a network of technical resources.

- Maintain active awareness of manufacturing technologies and techniques through professional development programs, especially state of the practice information concerning machining.

Marginal Duties/Responsibilities:
Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements/Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
Minimum of a BS degree in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering is required; MS or MBA preferred.  Position requires project management skills along with machining and lean manufacturing, experience.  Proficiency in software is highly desirable in the performance of job duties.

Language Skills:
Must be able to communicate effectively with client personnel and employees at all organizational levels and develop effective working relationships with staff and a network of technical resources.  This includes making presentations, serving as an instructor, and presenting timely reports to management.

Reasoning Ability:
Individual must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment, be able to plan and multi-task, be well organized, have excellent oral and written communication skills, work well under pressure, take initiative, and be flexible and cooperative.

Physical Demands:
Position requires the ability to sit for long periods at a computer terminal.  Some working, standing and bending are required.

Work Environment:
Normal office and shop environment and standard hours with occasional overtime required.  Extensive travel required with the ability to travel by aircraft and automobile to remote locations as needed, and the ability to drive/operate an automobile.
