Process mapping is one of the fundamental tools used in continuous improvement activities. It provides a cohesive visual of a process’ steps and key information even though the actual steps may occur at diverse locations.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a special form of a process map. It is used to identify, organize and plan for improvement opportunities.

This 1-day class will include a combination of lecture, demonstrations and in-class exercises. The first part of the day will take the participant through the basic process mapping methodology; focusing on standard icons, techniques and data collection. Both typical and swimlane versions will be discussed. The second part of the day will look at VSM and its standard approach. Both traditional and swimlane versions will be discussed.

At the end of the class, the participant should:

• Be able to construct basic process and VS maps in either a traditional or swimlane version
• Understand the process and VS mapping approaches
• Understand where to use the most appropriate mapping approach
• Understand standard icons / symbols used in constructing the maps and their particular usage
