Shop-Floor Monitoring Critical to Improving Factory Processes
Process improvement encompasses a wide range of tools, techniques and strategies. When properly deployed, shop-floor data collection and monitoring systems can help factory-floor managers leverage key data metrics including overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and total effective equipment performance (TEEP) that measure machine uptime and pinpoint bottlenecks or other problems in order to improve machining performance.
OEE metrics quantify factors including machine availability and operating time, part production performance, and quality.
Cloud Management: The Ultimate Tool in Lean Manufacturing
As a machining systems engineer and lean consultant, Techsolve’s Amit Deshpande has looked at the Cloud from both sides now. In a guest editorial, he explains how Cloud management systems have expanded the benefits of lean manufacturing beyond only operational tasks.
The goals of lean manufacturing are the same as they have been for years, eliminate waste to increase productivity, but the tools we have for implementing those goals are getting better all the time. Communication is critical in a lean manufacturing environment.

Six Spheres of High Precision Machining
An integrated approach implemented based on the consideration of six spheres – machine tool, cutting tool, work material, cutting fluid, machining accessories and machining parameters – will help the manufacturing industry eliminate dead time, minimize scrap rate, provide consistency and high quality precision parts at low cost, with maximum profitability.

Manufacturing profitability through well-maintained cutting tools
As with all work, there's a right tool for every job. In manufacturing, successful machining depends on sharp, well-maintained cutting tools that not only ensure precision, but also speed. Successful sharpening of cutting tools depends upon the use of the correct grinding wheel, tool setup and method of grinding for each type of tool. This article provides some basic but valuable information on cutting tool sharpening.

Are you a dreamer, or a doer? The MTConnect Challenge has something for both. The ultimate goal of the challenge is to engage and stimulate development of a broader base of advanced manufacturing intelligence applications that utilize the MTConnect standard.
Clippard Instrument Laboratory Inc.
In 1941, William Leonard Clippard, Jr. founded a company that sold electrical test equipment, magnetic windings and radio frequency coils. In order to manufacture that equipment, Clippard Instrument Laboratory began designing and building the miniature fluid power devices for which the company eventually became widely known.
Focus on Innovation is Key to Strengthening U.S. Manufacturing
As U.S. manufacturing gets molded by the current administration’s policy initiatives and the political rhetoric of presidential candidates, one thing remains clear: U.S. manufacturing needs to globally dominate if the United States is to remain an economic force. Although the U.S. is the world’s largest manufacturing economy, with about 21 percent of global manufactured goods produced here, that foothold is being threatened by its own policies on taxes, energy, and trade. Many have fingered innovation as a target for strengthening U.S.
